Father Nicosia: ‘Nobody is a star. It is other people who make us believe we are’
These are some of the witty, wise words pronounced by Father Gaetano Nicosia during the visit we pay to him on the day of his 100th birthday celebration, together with Nunzia and Daniela (of the Italian Women’s Association) and our friend Juan José Morales. We are glad to share with you some pictures of these special moments.
We found Father Nicosia in very good shape and eager to talk about life in general. ‘Stand up, I am nobody special’, he told Nunzia, who was bending to talk closer to his ear. ‘Why everybody wants to come here to see me today? Perché, perché?‘
Father Nicosia talked about his brother who is 102 years old and lives in Catania, Sicily. Nicosia went back there in 2012, to take part in the beatification ceremony of Father Allegra, the Franciscan friar who translated the Bible into Chinese.
His thoughts went then to Macau and to the many people he still knows there.
He spoke partly in Italian and partly in English, as a form of respect towards Juan, who is not Italian. ‘You are a lawyer, then you have to do good for the poor people. It is an important job.’ Nicosia told him.
Our hour with him passed very fast and, before we left, he asked us to take him to the church, as he he had the wish to pray: in the end, for a humble man like him, it was a day like any other. ‘You should not hope to live a long life. Just feel at peace with your heart and with the others. And the rest will come.’
Happy Birthday again, Father Nicosia! It was a honour to meet you again.
P.S: Michael Tam gently gave Beyond Thirty-Nine some other pictures of the event, the beautiful one on the top of the article included, which we added to our photos – thank you so much, Michael.
