Grazia Deledda Tenors in Hong Kong
Beyond Thirty-Nine, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Hong Kong and Macau, which is the organizer of the event, is proud to present the ‘Tenors of the Grazia Deledda Chorus’. This event will take place on Wednesday 4 February 2015, from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the Sheung Wan Civic Theatre, 345 Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong. Reserve at http://tinyurl.com/nnyyh5x
The ‘Tenors of the Grazia Deledda Chorus’ is a group of four singers, which will perform traditional Sardinian ‘a tenore’ songs. During the event, there will also be a presentation of the beautiful island of Sardinia, the native land of the artists.
The Grazia Deledda Chorus (‘Associazione Culturale Coro Grazia Deledda’) started performing with young chorus singers in 1987, under the name of ‘Coro Polifonico di Banneddu Ruiu’, in the city of Nuoro, under the guidance of the well recognized conductor Banneddu Ruiu, who was one of the first artists to give a full and authentic interpretation of the traditional Sardinian songs. He also created the first compositions of classical music that were taking inspiration from popular folklore.
In 2008, the Grazia Deledda Chorus achieved significant success in Prague, Czech Republic, in an international contest. Eighty-two choruses from all over the world took part in the competition. The Grazia Deledda Chorus was awarded the silver medal as well as the special prize for ‘Best Traditional Chorus’.
The name of the group pays homage to the Sardinian writer Grazia Deledda, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. Being a Cultural Association, the ‘Associazione Culturale Coro Grazia Deledda’, also takes care of researching, studying, preserving and promoting the local cultural traditions and language.
