July 15, 2013: Graduated from the City University of Hong Kong
I’m very happy about my hard achievement and I’d like to share with you my evaluation summary (of which I am very proud, of course):
“Ciriaco has certainly been an unusually original and creative writer – opinionated about but deeply engaged with literature – one who has impressed his mentors with his ability to consistently produce a significant amount of material. He has already had some success placing well in some of the most competitive contests at highly ranked literary journals, no small feat for someone who only began to write creatively in English later in life. He also has excellent critical abilities and has used his time in our program well. Although he does have an excellent command of written & literary English, given that his first language is Italian, a good copy editor could offer useful assistance when he is ready to submit a book manuscript for publication. We do believe he will be able to successfully publish a book-length work for the English language literary marketplace.
At residencies, Ciriaco was a cheerful presence, one who “added glee to class discussions” as one mentor says. He always was extremely engaged in all that was presented, and often provided a unique perspective and insights, bringing his own cultural background and professional experience to bear on the assigned readings and work by his classmates.
A forceful presence.
The “soul of diligence” is how his first mentor characterized him, and all his later mentors agree. There was never a problem with either the quantity or quality of the work he submitted in all his distance mentoring semesters, and this was true of both his creative and critical work.
His critical thesis was an excellent and thoughtful analysis of an important Russian novel. And his creative thesis, a non-fiction novel, was described by the second reader as “magical and moving.”
Ciriaco has an imaginative and powerful grasp of metaphor and the poetry of language in his prose.
He is indeed an original.”
