Colum Murphy is a Shanghai-based business reporter and creative nonfiction writer whose work chiefly examines themes of sexuality and identity in a globalized world.
He graduated in 2014 from City University Hong Kong’s MFA in Creative Writing. Colum is currently working on a humorous exploration of exile and orientation set against the backdrop of modern day China.
A native of Ireland, he has spent more than half of his life abroad, mainly in Japan and Greater China, with stretches in Spain, Thailand and the United States.
As a staff writer in the Shanghai bureau of The Wall Street Journal, Colum covers China’s booming automotive industry. He has also written for the now defunct Far East Economic Review, shipping newspaper Lloyd’s List and current affairs publication Newsweek International. Colum has received two awards from the Society of Publishers in Asia for his political reportage from Pakistan and Thailand.
