Sardinia Overseas Retreat – October 2014
Just received from Ms Xu Xi: “To all MFA students & alumni. This October, the MFA will be offering a overseas writing retreat and cultural exchange in Nuoro, Sardinia, Italy. This is a not-for-credit extracurricular activity and is scheduled for October 5 to October 11, 2014. Our CNF alumni Ciriaco Offeddu is the organizer of this retreat and has kindly found us sponsors to cover the travel and accommodation for up to four (4) of our MFA students and alumni (note: travel is economy flight from and back to your point of origin) . However, all students or alumni are welcome to participate at their own expense as well. We will have more details about the hotel and the accommodation cost later, but here is a link to the Hotel Sandalia in Nuoro where we will be staying – www.hotelsandalia.com.
A significant part of the retreat and cultural exchange will be attention to the work of Grazia Deledda, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. The author is a native of Sardinia, and her novels and theatrical works draw on the landscape and culture of her birthplace. She is also the first Italian woman writer to win the Nobel. For our retreat, we will select some of her work for the group to read and discuss. The schedule will include visits to the sites of her fictional world, immersion in Sardinian culture through visits to museums and presentations by high school students in Nuoro and the universities in Sassari and Cagliari. Attached is a schedule of activities Ciriaco has arranged with the various institutions and locales. In addition, the MFA group will also have time for our own writing and sharing of our work in an informal retreat setting. Several of our faculty will be in attendance as well (final list to be confirmed). We will announce more details of what the faculty will organise and present once the final faculty list is confirmed.
Please note that students who are accepted for the sponsorship will be expected to: read the selected Deledda text and participate in our discussions; attend the events and visits indicated on the schedule; submit a piece of writing that reflects on the Sardinia experience for publication in journals and magazines connected to the sponsors.
So if you put your hand up to do this, and are accepted, please recognize the responsibility attached. It also would be helpful if you do NOT cancel out on us because of non-emergency reasons or expect us to accommodate your individual schedule needs. So please, if you wish to be considered, be reasonably sure you really can attend on the dates specified, and are willing and able to participate in the program fully.
If any of you are in Hong Kong on May 30 and would like to see a performance of one of Deledda’s plays, please see the attached poster announcing this event.
Thanks are owed to Ciriaco for making this amazing opportunity available to our program!
For any students interested in being considered for the sponsorship, please email me by no later than May 30.”
