The Grazia Deledda Chorus
The Grazia Deledda Chorus was born in 1987. It was started by a group of young boys from Nuoro, with the support of the conductor Maestro Banneddu Ruiu. The official constitution of the Associazione Culturale Coro Grazia Deledda was agreed in 1990. After two years, Maestro Ruiu, unfortunately, had to leave, and the art direction was assigned to one of the founder members, the late Antonello Congiu. The young association researched and studied cultural traditions, with particular attention to the preservation and diffusion of the Sardinian language and customs.
In 2000, under the direction of Maestro Paolo Flumini, the first CD, Intro su Coro, with music and lyrics by G. F. Oppo, was published. The title refers to Grazia Deledda’s novel La Via del male.
In 2001, Giovanni Dessì became the new art director. In 2008, the Grazia Deledda Chorus achieved significant success in Prague in an international contest with 82 choruses from all over the world: the jury awarded the silver medal to the Grazia Deledda Chorus, and the special award for the best traditional chorus.
Maestro Gianpaolo Selloni took over as the new art director in 2010. Under his direction, a new CD, Su Redentore, entirely produced in Nuoro after several months of hard work, has been published: it includes 12 pieces and certifies the definitive consecration of the chorus in the Sardinian cultural landscape.
